Sauna and Its Effects on the Body

Do you know the beneficial effects of sauna bathing on human health? A sauna clears the mind and body, strengthens the immune system, and helps you relax after a demanding workday or sports performance. Heat therapy has been used since ancient times, and in many cultures it also had a ritual character beyond its healing effects.

Detoxification

A sauna has strong cleansing effects and supports the body’s natural elimination of waste substances. During sweating, unwanted compounds are released from the body, and blood flow to the skin and muscles increases. Hormone activity also accelerates, which helps relax tight muscles and joints and supports clearer airways. According to several studies, about 30 minutes in a sauna can lead to a level of waste elimination that is roughly comparable to what the kidneys process in 24 hours.

Thermoregulation

Heat therapy trains the body’s ability to regulate its internal temperature. Spending time in a sauna strengthens the function of temperature-sensitive neurons and improves how thermoregulatory centers in the brain work. These systems then become more efficient at managing transitions between hot and cold environments. This is especially beneficial during autumn and winter, when we frequently move between heated indoor spaces and cold outdoor weather.

Strengthening the immune system

Beyond improving thermoregulation, sauna use also supports immunity from another angle. Regular sauna bathing can stimulate the production of white blood cells, which play a key role in protecting the body against illness. It may improve overall resistance to viruses and bacteria, helping reduce the risk of catching common colds, flu, or upper respiratory infections.

Heart and Respiratory System

According to research by cardiologist Jari Laukkanen, alternating temperatures in a sauna can have effects similar to moderate to intense physical exercise. The difference is that it happens passively—while sitting or lying down, without additional physical strain, in a well-oxygenated environment. This makes it an effective way to stimulate cardiovascular function. The same applies to the respiratory system. Several studies suggest that regular sauna use may help reduce the risk of various chronic respiratory conditions.

Hot air helps open the airways, increases airflow, and improves lung vital capacity. It can make breathing easier and provide relief from certain respiratory issues, including chronic lung conditions. However, if you have serious heart or respiratory problems, it’s important to consult a doctor before using a sauna. A medical professional can recommend the right frequency and intensity, and determine whether sauna use is appropriate for your condition.

Beneficial Effects on Mental Health

In Celtic culture, early forms of sauna were used as places for spiritual rituals. In ancient Rome, steam baths served as spaces for relaxation and discussion. The Romans already understood that a steam bath relaxes not only the body but also the mind, making people more open and receptive in conversation. Beyond the physical health benefits mentioned above, sauna use also provides significant mental relief. It helps release tension in the muscles while also calming the mind after a demanding day. After completing a sauna cycle combined with cooling phases, it’s not recommended to engage in physically or mentally demanding activities. Instead, the goal should be full rest—allowing the body and mind to stay relaxed and recover properly.
