Liptov is a paradise for mountain hikers, skiers, and holidaymakers. But it also offers plenty of attractions for families with children. Fresh air benefits even the youngest visitors, so exploring Liptov with a stroller is a great way to experience this popular mountain destination. Here are a few tips for short, easy trips.
Pumped-storage reservoir Čierny Váh
Although this first recommendation is located a bit further from Ski & Wellness Residence Družba, it’s definitely worth the trip. Čierny Váh offers stunning panoramic views of the High Tatras and the entire Upper Liptov region. It’s one of the most impressive viewpoints in the area and a popular sightseeing destination. The hydroelectric system consists of two reservoirs. The upper reservoir, which is the main attraction, sits at an altitude of about 1,160 meters above sea level on the karst plateau of Vyšné Sokoly. The lower reservoir lies at 733 meters. Water is pumped from the lower basin through underground pipes that pass through turbines. The Čierny Váh power plant is the largest pumped-storage hydroelectric plant in Slovakia. The upper reservoir is also a favorite spot for cyclists who enjoy challenging climbs. For stroller-friendly walks around the reservoir, you can comfortably drive up by car. Once there, you’ll find well-maintained asphalt paths and stunning open views of the surrounding mountains.

Háj Nicovô above Liptovský Mikuláš
Right above the town of Liptovský Mikuláš lies the popular viewpoint Háj Nicovô. It offers a full panoramic view of the surrounding mountains. To the northwest you can see the High Tatras with the iconic Kriváň peak, followed by the Western Tatras, while the Choč Mountains close the horizon. Looking south, you’ll see the Low Tatras with the Jasná ski resort, and to the west parts of the Great Fatra range. Below, the entire town spreads out like a map, with the Liptovská Mara reservoir and nearby villages clearly visible.
Háj Nicovô is not only a viewpoint but also a memorial site with a cemetery dedicated to soldiers who fell during World War II. “It was here that some of the longest and most intense battles of the end of the war took place,” states the official city website. In addition to its historical significance, the area also serves as a sports and recreation zone. You’ll find a workout area and running trails named after Liptov’s Olympic athletes Petra Vlhová and Michal Martikán. Families with small children can park directly at the memorial site, take a stroller-friendly walk around the area, and enjoy the views. In bad weather, there is also a covered shelter overlooking the town.

Church of the Virgin Mary near Liptovská Mara
Our final recommendation doesn’t take you up into the mountains, but instead moves to the shores of Liptovská Mara, between the villages of Bobrovník and Vlachy. Here you’ll find a unique Gothic church from the 13th century—or rather, what remains of it today: its tower and the footprint of the original structure. According to the official website of the city of Ružomberok, the church was one of the most important religious buildings in Liptov during the Middle Ages. After the Liptov county was established, regional assemblies were even held at this site. Today, the area is popular for its scenic setting and highly photogenic views of the lake and surrounding landscape. A parking area is located nearby, making it easily accessible. It also serves as a starting point for a steep trail leading to the nearby archaeological site of Havránok, a Celtic hillfort.

Families with small children can take a relaxed walk around the area, and part of the dam wall of Liptovská Mara is also accessible nearby, bending through this section of the landscape. We do not recommend pushing a stroller up the steep trail to the hillfort, but more athletic parents with all-terrain strollers can make it to the top and enjoy another breathtaking viewpoint.
