Cross-Country Skiing in Liptov

Liptov is best known for the incredible ski slopes of Jasná and the surrounding area, but the region between the Low Tatras and Western Tatras also offers ideal conditions for cross-country skiing, with more than 43 miles (70 kilometers) of groomed trails. If you’re looking to try something beyond downhill skiing during your mountain vacation, it’s hard to find a better place.

Cross-Country Skiing

Cross-country skiing is a winter sport that uses skis for forward movement across snowy or icy terrain. It can be enjoyed in a wide variety of settings—from forests and mountains to open countryside and even urban areas. The sport is especially popular in countries like Sweden, Finland, and Russia, but it has a strong following around the world. It’s an excellent way to improve endurance, stay active, and experience nature from a completely different perspective.

Two Different Styles

There are two main styles of cross-country skiing: classic and skate skiing. Classic skiing is done on groomed trails with parallel tracks set into the snow. In this style, you move forward using a natural stride, alternating your left and right skis in a motion similar to walking or running. Skate skiing, on the other hand, takes place on wider groomed trails designed more like skating lanes. This technique uses side-to-side leg movements similar to ice skating. Skate skiing is generally faster and more dynamic, but it also requires greater balance, coordination, and technique.

Gear and What to Wear

One of the biggest advantages of cross-country skiing is that you don’t need heavy, expensive equipment like you do for downhill skiing. Cross-country skis are incredibly lightweight compared to alpine skis, and the boots are much lighter, more flexible, and generally more comfortable. Poles are slightly longer than downhill ski poles and are an essential part of your gear, helping with balance, propulsion, and rhythm on the trails. As for accessories, don’t forget sunglasses. On bright days, sunlight reflecting off the snow can be intense—especially on wide open trails—and protecting your eyes is a must. When it comes to clothing, think light and functional. You definitely won’t need a bulky winter jacket or insulated ski pants. Cross-country skiing is highly active, and once you get moving, your heart rate rises quickly and your body warms up fast. Layers that breathe and allow movement are the best choice.

Jasná – Zadné Vody

The closest cross-country trail to Ski & Wellness Residence Družba is the Demänovská Valley – Jasná – Zadné Vody route. Located at around 3,937 feet (1,200 meters) above sea level, these trails are prepared on natural snow and groomed by snowcat. This is a relatively easy 1.9-mile (3-kilometer) route, making it a great option for beginners or anyone looking for a relaxed outing. The recommended starting point is across from Hotel Sorea Marmot.

Závažná Poruba

The cross-country trails above the village of Závažná Poruba, near the Opalisko ski resort, offer about 3 miles (4.9 kilometers) of groomed routes. You can conveniently park right below the ski lift and enjoy beautiful panoramic views over the Liptov Basin while skiing.

Žiar and Žiar Valley

One of the most popular areas for both locals and visitors is Žiar Valley. Skiers can enjoy sunny open meadows in the surrounding area, while more experienced athletes can tackle the route to Žiarska Cottage when conditions allow. The round trip through the valley is nearly 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) with close to 2,000 feet (600 meters) of elevation gain. The descent can be more challenging, so this route is generally better suited for advanced skiers. Another option is the longest trail on the northern side of Liptovský Mikuláš, which ends in the village of Žiar. This route starts in the Háj area near Smrečany and stretches approximately 6.6 miles (10.7 kilometers).

Kokava Meadows

Another popular cross-country skiing spot is Kokava Meadows. To get there, turn right after the Museum of the Liptov Village in Pribylina. After crossing the bridge and heading uphill, take the first possible left turn. There’s an open area where you can park your car, gear up, and head straight onto the trails. The Kokava Meadows loop is just over 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) long, making it a great option for a shorter, more relaxed outing. Of course, these trails are only a small sample of what Liptov has to offer for cross-country skiing. Excellent routes can also be found nearby in Pavčina Lehota, Lazisko, Iľanovo, and Liptovský Ján. For those willing to venture a bit farther, there are additional trails around Malinô Brdo, as well as Hrabovo and Čutkovo valleys. Whether you’re looking for a quick scenic loop or a more demanding adventure, Liptov offers routes for every skill level.
