How to choose your first ski gear

Inspired by Petra Vlhová’s performances in the World Cup circuit or videos of riders floating through deep powder snow up to their shoulders? Thinking about trying one of the most popular winter sports for the first time? Getting to that level takes time, and it all starts with proper ski equipment. Let’s take a closer look at the essentials that should not be missing from your gear.

Skis

There are dozens of ski types on the market, varying in shape, sidecut, and materials. In general, skis can be divided based on two main criteria. Based on your skill level, they are divided into beginner, recreational, and racing skis. Based on terrain or activity, they can be further divided into skis for off-piste terrain (outside groomed slopes), piste skis, and freestyle skis designed for snowpark riding.

We will mainly focus on basic beginner models designed for groomed slopes at the Jasná – Low Tatras ski resort. If you are skiing for the first time or only occasionally, the most important thing is stability and confidence on your skis. That’s why softer skis with a composite core are recommended. They give you better control and make turning easier, without requiring too much force.

However, you should avoid high speeds and steep, demanding terrain with this type of ski. In skiing, as in anything else, progress should be gradual, and as your skills improve, you may eventually consider switching to stiffer skis. As for the ideal ski length, there is no universal answer. It depends on the skier’s preferences and the type of terrain they plan to use them on. In general, beginners are recommended skis that reach somewhere between chin and nose height.

Ski boots

If you’re buying equipment in a specialized store, the salesperson will usually help you choose the right ski boots. However, if you’re ordering online or buying second-hand, be careful not to make a mistake. Even if the size matches your regular shoes, the key factor is the flex index, which indicates the stiffness of the boot. On standard models, it typically ranges from about 40 to 170. The higher the number, the stiffer the boot and the more efficiently it transfers energy from your legs to the skis. For beginners, softer boots are the better choice. If you are not used to the pressure and choose a high flex index, a day on the slopes can quickly turn into a very uncomfortable experience.

Ski poles

Another essential piece of equipment is ski poles. With poles, the most important factor is the correct length. Material and basket size are secondary. There are several methods to determine the right length. The simplest one can be tested directly in a shop and takes only a few minutes. Turn one pole upside down (basket up), grip it just under the basket, and place it on the ground. If the length is correct, your elbow should form a right angle. There are also telescopic poles available, where the length can be adjusted depending on your needs and skiing style. However, this type is mainly suitable for more experienced skiers, especially ski mountaineers.

Protective gear

When buying ski equipment, don’t forget protective gear that can, in certain situations, save your life. Ski slopes are shared by many skiers and snowboarders of different skill levels. Even if you are carefully practicing your first turns and following the rules of the FIS Code, a collision can still happen without your fault. That’s why wearing a helmet while skiing is strongly recommended.

Choose a helmet that fits well, feels comfortable, and does not restrict your peripheral vision. There are also helmets with integrated visors on the market. These can serve as a reliable alternative to ski goggles, which are another essential part of every ski kit. Goggles are useful not only during heavy snowfall but also effectively protect your eyes from wind and glare.

Among protective gear, you can also find a so-called “back protector” or “turtle shell,” which reinforces the back and provides protection in case of a fall. For beginner skiers, it helps reduce the impact of falls and can prevent injuries. If you are still unsure about choosing the right equipment after reading this article, you can visit the rental shop at Ski & Wellness Residence Družba, accessible directly from the Biela Púť ski slope. The helpful staff will gladly assist you in selecting the right gear.
